Overview Effect A.1 uses real-time satellite positional data to drive the motion of a kinetic sculpture. The sculpture and accompanying satellite are meant to connect viewers with the vastness of space and convey the complexities of nature that surround us at all scales.
Behind the motorized, kinetic movement of the piece is a dedicated satellite in low Earth orbit. The small CubeSat reports its positional data as it moves around the Earth. As the satellite passes over the location of the sculpture every 90 minutes, the independently rotating “petals” of the piece go from a slowly meandering, asynchronous movement to a precise, synchronous pattern. As the satellite moves away from the sculpture’s location, the movement of the petals returns to a slow, arrhythmic movement.
The sculpture uses nearly 100% recycled materials and is nearly 100% recyclable.
