Wind Reef uses vertical wind turbines to power the latest technology in generative coral reef production. As the sculptural turbines move, a small amount of energy is directed towards the base of the piece—a sculptural iron frame that rests on the floor of the Red Sea.
The remaining energy is used to power lights at the base of the turbines, turning them into kinetic light installations at night.
Sensors on board the piece provide data to be used for generative music, responsive lighting, video visualization, and other creative ventures looking to create art with data from nature.
Below water, the reef is a complex, occupiable sculpture itself. For a few moments in the evening, the reef comes alive with coloured and black light that allows visitors to have a diving experience unlike any other.
